Meri – Meri’s Wonderland

Who do you admire the most and why?

I am a big admirer of Minerva Mirabal. She and her sisters opposed the Dominic dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, formed an opposition group and were later assassinated. Although her life ended so brutally, the story of her and her sisters touched me in ways I cannot explain. I hail from Dominican roots and this is a part of my history. Minerva’s strength, courage, persistence and love for life amaze me. No matter the circumstances she never gave up in working toward her beliefs and goals. Minerva Mirabal is one of the strongest and most admirable women I’ve ever learned about. She inspires me to always keep fighting and pushing forward.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Those that know me know just how much I hate school. Although I got my diploma, college has been a challenge for me. After many failed attempts, my sisters have talked me into taking baby steps and enrolling in a medical assistant course. For the first time ever, I stayed with a school course after having started it. In just 10 weeks I will graduate. I also took a step toward attending college. I plan to major in nursing and hopefully will become a nurse practitioner in pediatrics one day. I’m getting closer and closer to obtaining a life long dream.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge has been overcoming my fear of being alone. Since the break up with my daughter’s father
I have taken the time to get to know myself. I learned to sit still and enjoy my own company. It wasn’t easy but I took myself out to dinner, movies, for walks, museums, shopping, etc. I learned to love myself and put myself first for once. I
discovered my own worth and am now very cautious of who I let in.

What is your favorite smell?

I love the smell of BBQ. In the Dominican Republic a lot of people still cook on the fogon. When I smell BBQ grills it just takes me back to my country. It always reminds me of my family and my grandma’s cooking. It morphs me back to a time when my summers were spent with countless cousins running around without a care in the world.

Who is your favorite superhero and why?

Superman. Superman was more than just strength. His ability to fly and be free was what always caught my attention. I’ve always wanted to know what it would feel like to be that free, and to be able to fly around and enjoy the beauties of the world.
