QUESTION: I have issues with my self-esteem. I’m not in a happy place right now and I don’t know what to do to get myself more motivated. I just need help. What can I do to get myself involved in life and be who I truly am and not what others want me to be?
DR. PEREZ’ ADVICE: Feeling good about ourselves is key to living a happy and fulfilled life. I don’t know how old you are, but building self-confidence is a journey many women successfully navigate as they get older. Poor self-esteem is tied to multiple factors, from negative messages we received growing up, to challenging personal experiences (e.g., abandonment, loss). Low self-confidence can also be related to depression; in other words, if you’re feeling depressed, you may also not feel so good about yourself.
My best advice is to encourage you to talk to a counselor or therapist about your situation, and to gain insight into why you’re feeling this way. Sometimes, just talking about this with someone who’s understanding and supportive can make a huge difference. You can find a local therapist on www.PsychologyToday.com, a directory of counselors and therapists. Or, you can also find a local community mental health clinic in our area.
I wish you the best,
