Attorney Eneida Roman – “Do I Need Both Parent’s Signatures For My Baby To Be Able To Get A Passport To Travel To Colombia?”

QUESTION:

Hi Ms. Roman. I fell in love and got pregnant at a very young age. My son is now 17-months-old and I’m very proud of him. His dad was at his birth and signed the birth certificate. Then he disappeared. Since his son was born he hasn’t helped me out at all. I recently just found out that he has another child. I want to take my son to Colombia on a family vacation but I can’t because I need his signature in order for them to allow my son to travel there. Is there anything I can do? Thanks!

ATTORNEY ROMAN’S ADVICE:

Hi. You need to go to family court and file for a custody-support petition. If the father never responds then the court will grant you full custody of your child. You bring a certified copy of the custody determination to the passport office and they will let you get a passport for your child. Morevover, always carry that certified order with you to prevent any problems in the future.
